When I heard the first announcement of Pharrell Williams' new album a week or so ago, I was expecting it to be the JT 20/20 Experience album of 2014. I was correct.
Mega producer and hat trend setter, Pharrell Williams, proved that he has officially come out of hiding and dropped his album smoothly this week. Blurred Lines, past all the dodgy innuendos and semi naked models that made up the music video, delivered a sample of the new, ingenious RnB material that was to come. In fact, if you were to listen to the tracks and imagine what the music videos would like, Blurred Lines would appear, well, minus Robin Thicke and his awkward smirks at the camera.
The 10 track album is filled with beats that can only be described using one adjective - slick. Pharrell has been known to release the biggest pop/RnB songs of the last 10 years, including Drop It Like It's Hot by Snoop Dogg (taking it back to the old school now) but Pharrell never truly got the recognition for these songs that he deserved. This album is basically a two's up to those who never recognised his producing ability. Hence why there is only three collaborations on this album.
I was worried when I heard that there was a Miley Cyrus collab, but it only seemed right to put together two of the most talked about people of 2013 together on one song. Come Get It Bae is quite obviously from the title filled with innuendos but hey, it has a good beat, you can't knock it. Miley's lyrics and voice however are very hard to distinguish upon first listen (she is the only other voice, just to clarify!)
My personal favourite on the album, Gust of Wind, is one of them songs that will never get old no matter how many times you put it on repeat. With the superb key change for the chorus, it adds an extra flavour to the song and if Pharrell doesn't make this one the next single, I will be both surprised and disappointed.
A pure contender for Top Albums of the year, definitely.
