In the latest issue of Q Magazine, the majority of the magazine was filled with a variety of musicians spanning all kinds of genres talking about the albums that changed their lives and how those particular albums made them want to become musicians. It really got me thinking about what music has changed my life and the songs and albums that made me feel so passionate and moved by music. The music that made me become an absolute music maniac who writes about it for fun. It also made me realise that it would be literally impossible for me to pick just one album/song to be my all time favourite because so many have touched me in so many different ways.
Dancing in the Moonlight - Toploader:
Kick starting this list with a song from the early 00's, Dancing in the Moonlight was a song of my childhood. It reminds me so fondly of my early childhood days back in Hertfordshire driving through the city/country roads to trampolining or to a friend's birthday party. This song fills me with such nostalgic joy and still to this day remains firmly in my playlist.
Everybody's Changing - Keane:
There is something about this particular song by Keane that gives me shivers (in a good way of course) I remember sitting in a bar on holiday with my Dad once and this song came on the radio and my Dad, the complete music amateur that he is, turns to me and goes "I know this song, it's Keane, I listened to it all the way to New York once" I was completely startled that he knew the song since his music collection consists of the likes of Luther Vandross and this band called China Crisis, which are a band I'm still trying to get my head around. Now, every time I hear this song and my Dad is with me, we look at each other in sync and smile knowing that we shared somewhat of a musical moment some time ago. It's also a very lovely song to listen to on long car journeys.
The Man Who Can't Be Moved - The Script
In 2008, my family and I had just come back from a holiday in Turkey. 2 days after returning to the UK, my Mum was rushed to hospital. It was about 12:30am when my Dad woke me up and told me that he was driving my Mum to the hospital and that I needed to come along for moral support. On the drive there, that early morning in the middle of summer, The Man Who Can't Be Moved by new kids on the block The Script started playing on the radio.
My Mum was in hospital for 4 days and every time I got in the car to visit her, this song would come on, no matter what time of day it was. Even sometimes now when I hear it play on the radio, I start to get emotional. This started my love affair for The Script and made me realise how much music can help you through a difficult time.
One Time by Justin Bieber
I think it's fair to say that Justin Bieber's music changed my life, no matter how much you want to sit there and side eye me for liking such "pop trash"
The story of how I became to be a Justin Bieber fangirl is one I find quite interesting. It was 2009 when the initial buzz about this floppy haired Canadian kid started to make it's way across the globe and to be honest, I did not see the big deal. His song One Time would pop up on music channels 24/7 almost as if it was waiting for me to fall into his trap but I was completely naive to his charm.
August 2009, I walk into hmv and see My World sitting on the shelf by the front door. I muttered under my breath "God this kid is following me" After a while of walking past it and the glances at the CD getting longer and longer, I fought against my initial instincts and bought it.
The rest is history.
6 years later, I have been through hell and back with this kid but I wouldn't change it for the world. He shaped me into being the teenager I was/still am and his music, although most of the world think that he is an absolute jerk, changed my life.
Angles - The Strokes:
I was going to pick an individual song but then I realised that every single song on that album has changed my life. I was a little bit late to the party when it came to discovering The Strokes but now I do not know how I ever lived without knowing of their existence. Angles is the album in particular that helped me see and analyse music in a completely different way. I've always been a fan of indie rock music but nothing of that integrity and seriousness.
No One Knows - Queens of the Stone Age
Shortly after discovering The Strokes, I searched around trying to discover other rock bands and listen to bands who wrote their own songs and accompanied those songs with epic guitar/bass riffs. I soon came across Queens of the Stone Age. The first song that came up in the search was No One Knows and I was one note in when I fell absolutely in love in it. The guitar in it are out of this world. I never ever knew guitars could sound quite so beautiful.
If I was to list every song that has influenced the person I am today, this blog post would be a million pages long. I strongly believe in the notion that music taste is opinion and the music you absolutely hate can be part of the soundtrack of someone else's life. We all interpret music in different ways and have different preferences when it comes to genre. So please, next time you think of bashing on someone who likes a boy band or a mainstream chart artist, just remember that they enjoy that type of music and it makes them happy. Music is not fashion, it's art.
