Last week, after a 5 month hiatus, I was rekindled with a place brimming with the bodies of over enthusiastic, loud-music-lovers looking to escape their problems for a night and loose their minds to insane guitar music - I'm of course talking about a Catfish and the Bottlemen gig. 5 months ago exactly, I saw the now Brit Breakthrough winners dominate my local gig venue to a small and sturdy, but in some parts still crazy 1,200 crowd (blog post on that can be found here). So blown away by the chaos, I decided to travel to the iconic 02 Forum in Kentish Town, London to see them again, only to learn that a band who once upon a time had to throw their demo CD's at some of the big time names to get noticed, can control a crowd, create a loud and abrupt atmosphere and make a one album setlist sound like a greatest hits tour, whilst still carrying the same professionalism the big boys have.
London crowds are notorious for being louder, wilder and more chaotic than an average crowd but what unfolded on that Monday night was something indescribably beautiful. Commencing the electrifying, extended set with Homesick, the gradual introduction of the song did not put the crowd off from belting out the lyrics word perfect, leaving lead singer Van McCann in a daze from the opening chord, something I have never before witnessed to that day. It was mesmerising. Every song made the crowd grow louder, more excitable and more enticed.
With the sophomore album "The Ride" due for release on 27 May, it was the perfect opportunity to premiere a handful of the new releases. Fan favourite 7 (which may or may not be premiering on the Annie Mac show on Radio 1 tomorrow evening!) was played on the previous run of dates but like a fine wine, it just gets better with age. Anything is a live masterpiece, with a mid riff guitar solo that is simply mind-blowing. The song is bouncy, energetic and truly emphasises the enthusiasm the band have for their music.
A brand new set of dates have recently been added in the weeks leading up to the new album release, meaning that there are even more chances for me to get warped into their web, which is dwindling its way to the big time.
