Artist Spotlight: Lisbon

Artist Spotlight: Lisbon

Whitley Bay, a small seaside town in Tyne and Wear, has a population of just over 9,000 people. As well as having a dazzling coastline, one of the more luxurious stretches of England beaches, Whitley Bay is also the origin of Lisbon, a band who maybe, if current success climaxes further, will put Whitley Bay on the map.

Lisbon are a four piece alt-pop band, and yes, I know what you may be thinking. You may be sat there reading this article thinking that it is pretty standard of bands who's fanbase originates from the "Indie Twitter community" to identify themselves with this genre in the desperate need to gain popularity, but what Lisbon have and deliver to their ever-growing fanbase is far more than average. Lisbon's sounds vary from feel good summer vibes to heavier, almost rock vibes - latest track Shark (released on 25 April and has since had airplay on many large radio stations including Radio 1) is an example of the latter. Popular track Vice is a party number of large proportion. Its inspiring and infectious sound is guaranteed to lift any mood, and make you sway and move uncontrollably. Their entire discography has its own little sparkle - an element of their aesthetic that has handed their increasing popularity to them, right into the palm of their hand.

Their overwhelming gratuity is also something truly admirable. The time and consideration they have for their small but mighty fanbase is something that larger and more established bands should take note of. Their fanbase is slowly but surely expanding both online and to venues in towns miles away from their origin of Whitley Bay. There may be a few bad live reviews floating around the internet (there's a pretty brutal one from a recent gig in Norwich, which is unprofessional and not impartial like a review should be, so if you encounter it, avoid it at all costs!) but these are overshadowed by the noise that is accumulating for the band. Like I said, strong and mighty!

A truly wonderful band with a potential to use their unique sounds to become the next big thing in alternative music.

Also, if you live in Newcastle, the surrounding area or even Whitley Bay itself, Lisbon are hosting a boat party "Lisbon upon Tyne" on Thursday 23 June. Good tunes and a sail down the River Tyne, what more can you want from a Thursday night in June?! Tickets can be found here, but hurry, they are very limited!
