Ed Sheeran Is Not A Phenomenon

Ed Sheeran is not a phenomenon.

Yes, this man may have just headlined the biggest festival in the world. And yes, this man may have somehow managed to defy all laws of music charts and have all 16 tracks from his latest album in the Top 20. But something global superstar Ed Sheeran lacks, is integrity.

Ed Sheeran first graced the music world in 2011 and since then, the world has put him on a pedestal so high that he thinks it is somewhat feasible to charge people £80 to see him warble love songs out for 2 hours in a stadium next June. For a man who wants to appear as a down-to-earth guitar singer/songwriter, this, quite frankly, takes the piss. Almost as much as Sheeran's "disgust" for touts selling the tickets for eight times the face value. Like, really Ed, REALLY?!

The large entertainers of the last century have not/continue to not charge that much for their full-scale spectacle - pyro, lights etc all included in the price. So why should the likes of Sheeran, a man notorious for providing a "simple show" charge so much?

From the get-go, Ed and his PR team have tried to convince the buying public that every inch of Ed's persona is carved from the finest gold. That he is somewhat of a commodity, a rare diamond amongst all of the ruby's. But he isn't. He is merely a man who plays a guitar. There are just more eyes than average watching him. But just because Ed and his PR team know that he has the ability to fill Wembley several times on one tour, it does not mean that they should charge those prices. A family of four does not deserve to take out a second mortgage just to go to an Ed Sheeran concert.

However, it would be wrong to ignore how he has helped other artists. Not only by writing hit songs for them (Justin Bieber's Love Yourself was Sheeran's idea) but for also changing the rules of the charts to mean that only three songs from any one artist can be in the Top 10 at a time. This will stop further Ed Sheeran-style takeovers. It will also allow upcoming artists to gain that prestigious Top 10 place a whole lot quicker and easier.

Ed Sheeran is not a phenomenon. He is just a man who plays a guitar. End of discussion.
