The 2014 Grammy's Review

Last year's Grammy's was a wash out. Nothing spectacular and memorable. So much so that Justin Bieber's crashed Twitcam created more social buzz than the prestigious award show. This year's Grammy's however, blew every single expectation of the award show out of the window. The Grammy's, now in its 56th year, are an annual music awards ceremony celebrating musical success in American charts over the past year (I still think Ed Sheeran should have won an award but let's not get into that just now).

The ultimate show stopper was, of course, the queen of everything Beyonce. Not only did she and her husband Jay-Z both scoop up a grammy each, they also enjoyed each other's company on stage during an intimate performance of Drunk in Love. Jay-Z's acceptance speech for his gong for Best RnB Song Collaboration for his and JT's efforts with Holy Grail caused an conversation. Not because it offended anyone, but simply because of the utter cuteness that emanated from it. The "Look Blue, Daddy got you a new gold sippy cup" quote was my favourite part.

The outfits the celebrity guests wear is something that almost every award show thrives upon. The red carpet event, despite simply consisting of celebrities parading up and down a carpet and doing pointless interviews, is a highly anticipated event as we all secretly love slagging off someone's dress. Beyonce, again stole that damn show. However, I think if there could be an award for the craziest head gear worn by a celebrity at an award show, it would hands down go to Pharrell Williams. His beehive style hat left everyone curious as to who could possibly have been hiding underneath it, or maybe it was spare storage for one of Daft Punk's helmets. Being somewhat of a fashion mogul with his own fashion label, you'd think he'd know not to wear a beanie and trilby hat at the same time.

Everyone's favourite 17 year old Lorde picked up two Grammy's for her overexposed song Royals. I think personally if the exceptional talent that is Lorde was to be credited for anything that night, it should have been for her album Pure Heroine. Her performances, although they displayed her talent perfectly, showed that she still needs a few lessons in what to do with her hands whilst performing. It makes it a somewhat awkward viewing experience.

Up until last night, The Hunger Games superstar Jennifer Lawrence held the imaginary gong for most embarassing moment at an award show by tripping up the stairs to the stage at last year's Oscars. The title now goes to Taylor Swift. The pop turn country singer was nominated for Album of the Year, and for the best part of 3 seconds, she thought she had won. It was only until the next syllable of the actual winning album's title was announced that she realised that it was in fact Daft Punk's Random Access Memories which took home the prize. Utter humiliation on Taylor's part I think you could agree.

There were a lot of standout performances but I think the true performance highlight was from Macklemore and Ryan Lewis with their hit song Same Love. The song is about gay marriage and that the very controversial issue in some US states is ok and that "no matter what God you believe in, we all come from the same one" and that all love, whether shared with a man and a woman or a man and a man, is the same. Not only was it a good vocal performance, it was also outstanding in terms of visuals. Queen Latifah, who introduced the two piece, later returned to the stage to marry 30 couples right there in the middle of the Grammy's. Many of these couples were of the same sex which made it all that little bit special seeming as that is the issue that the song tackles. Then, out of nowhere, the "church gates" opened and Madonna strided out in her signature white cowboy outfit and sung the chorus of her own song. By the end of it all, the entire audience were on their feet and many of the tougher looking audience members were reduced to tears.

In terms of awards, Daft Punk and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis topped the polls by winning 4 Grammy's each for their incredible achievements regarding both their singles and their albums as a whole. Thankfully, Pharrell ditched the hat before accepting his awards.
