How four aussies have proved to the world that chart success CAN be made from authenticity, musical talent and a sprinkle of pop punk
~
At exactly 9pm this evening, pop rockers 5 Seconds of Summer released the music video for their upcoming single She's Kinda Hot and I'm here to tell you exactly why you must spare 4 minutes of your life to watch it. A music video that is a wonder to both eyes and ears. I can assure you that this is the most unbiased way of telling you of 5SOS' sheer genius, both in terms of their new sound and how they have been marketing themselves from day one.
She's Kinda Hot, which is a song highlighting how your insecurities and personal issues are what you make you hot, is described by the band as a sample of their new sound and the direction they want to take musically. This makes me very excited for several reasons. 5 Seconds of Summer currently sit somewhere comfortably between a pop band and punk rock band. A pop band, suggested by the large scale fan hysteria that has ignited the globe in the last 12 months or so and their chart dominance in every continent and a punk rock band, suggested by their musical abilities both vocally and instrumentally (they are extremely talented at both) The question is, in this digital day and age, which of these is more important?
Being the perfect mix of both pop and punk is something new and exciting to the mainstream music industry and is maybe the reason why many people are still confused by what 5SOS are all about. They are not some genetically modified group put out into the music world to make money for the big dogs. They are a real band who have a real and almost overwhelming passion for music which is portrayed in every song, EP and album they release. The fact that a bunch of young lads who have real talent are mixed into the land of the charts - a land where people are compelled to collaborate with Pitbull, house tracks are all anyone knows and where female artists fight over just about everything - is something that continues to attract people to 5SOS. Pure authenticity with a sprinkle of a fresh pop punk sound is exactly what the charts have ordered.
As for the music video itself, it is an artistic masterpiece. The bold colours and animations, which is a similar feature we saw in their earlier music video for single Don't Stop, perfectly contrasts with the stage setup driving through an ill lit street truly broadcasting their pop punk-esque. And once again, 5SOS did not use any of the conventional features of a pop music video (hot girls could have been used but once again were not) further emphasising their authenticity. Round of applause to you lads for not bowing down to convention!
The music video has the stylings of both a pop and a punk rock music video. It is the type of music video that can play on both MTV and Kerrang simultaneously - a juxtaposition that you never really thought possibly until now.
The future is looking as far away from the "boyband that toured with One Direction" days as possible and are slowly turning into showing the true 5SOS which fans have seen for years and I personally am very, very excited. The EP 'She's Kinda Hot' releases on UK iTunes on August 28
