Sounds of January - The Empty Set, Sundara Karma, Viola Beach and more!

Hello folks and a very belated Happy New Year to you,

If you follow me on Twitter, you would have probably noticed that I have a brand spanking new #TrackOfTheDay feature. Last Monday, I started posting a Track of the Day every day and so far, I have managed to stick to it (really is a new year, new me!) These daily tracks can be anything from brand new songs to all time classics - it's whatever song I have been listening to non-stop that day. So follow me on Twitter (@hayleywhispers) to get a daily dose of my music library.

The tracks of the day so far have been (18 - 25th January):

  • Renegade by Reigning Days
  • Ecstasy by HAZE
  • Lady, Please by The Magic Gang
  • Changing Colour by The Empty Set
  • Boys That Sing by Viola Beach
  • 1998 by Chet Faker
  • Never Had A Dream by Hunck
  • Cocoon by Catfish and the Bottlemen

So what have I been listening to in January?

Let's start with a UK grime classic - The Streets. After watching countless interviews of Van McCann and hearing him going on about how lyrical gifted frontman Mike Skinner is, I decided to give them a go. The Streets are not a band I would usually listen to as they are not part of a genre I am too fond of, but there is just something infectious about them. A Grand Don't Come For Free, their 2004 album, is my personal favourite, however Has It Come To This? from the Original Pirate Material album is what garage music should inspire to be like.

I have become so emotionally invested in Sundara Karma throughout the course of January that I generally do not remember my life before I discovered them. A wonderful new indie band originating from Reading, their music is mystical and magical - heavy instruments with sweet undertones. I am really excited to be seeing them live in February.

It feels like ever since I began listening to Blossoms about mid way through January, they have got bigger and bigger, appearing on countless radio breakthrough and Tips for 2016 lists across the UK. And that is perfectly understandable - they are incredible! Delivering the same sort of heaviness as Catfish and the Bottlemen but with a larger dose of indie vibes, their lead single At Most A Kiss is an anthem of great proportion.

The lovely people of brand new band Alxndr followed me on Twitter, I listened to their music and instantly fell in love. The music video for my favourite song from their Rwnd EP, 4am, is full of neon coloured backdrops and 90's outfits, perfectly illustrating their so-cal-esque, dreamy sound. If you were a fan of old schoolers Owl City and Two Door Cinema Club, then Alxndr are the band for you.

I am still to find a song by up and coming band Viola Beach that I can find a fault in. Viola Beach are the most exciting band to surface in a long while. A refreshing new wave for pop music - dynamic and packed full of energy, despite being from the dreary Northern town of Warrington (their words not mine!) Their sound is unlike no other, so I will spare them my infamous comparisons I usually like to make with current bands, and simply tell you all to listen to them. It will take just one listen to become besotted with their infectious aura.

And at last but certainly not least, I present to you The Empty Set.

Fresh faced indie rock band The Empty Set, are a band that are on the early stages of a complete indie world domination. Based in Portsmouth and comprising of band members Pete, Ollie and Charlie, The Empty Set are a no-nonsense and incredibly humble band who can perfectly match romantic lyrics to wondrous rock sounds. Each of their songs has it's own dynamic twist to it, making not one song similar to the other. There are very few bands, even the bands with several albums in their bag, that can make such a variety of sounds in their discography, and this band are only just getting started. It is important that these kind of bands get recognition because they will bring the mainstream indie scene a brand new burst of life.
